Problem Set Rules for Math 121
Section 03, Fall 2024

General Rules

1. Each problem set comes with a clearly marked due date and time. It must be submitted to Gradescope by that time.
Remember to allow at least 10 minutes to upload and tag your problem set.

2. I will generally set Gradescope to accept submissions after the deadline, but I will be able to see exactly how late it was submitted. The grade for a late assignment will be marked down:

A. 5% for being even a second late, and
B. 5% for each successive hour late

SUGGESTION: Get every problem set submitted early. Any time you cut things close, you're risking missing the deadline.

Obviously, exceptions to the above penalties can be made in cases of serious illness, family emergency, religious conflict (provided you notify me at least 3 days in advance), or other comparably significant conflicts. Network/tech issues also usually qualify, except when you wait until just a few minutes before the deadline to submit your work.

Please note:

A. Submit problem sets via Gradescope.

B. You cannot hand in part of the problem set on time and another part later. (Note: Gradescope will only keep track of the LAST submission you make for a given assignment, obliterating any record of anything you may have submitted before.)

C. When I compute the separate effort portion of your grade, all problem sets handed in by the last day of classes will be counted without penalties, regardless of how late they are. (If you have something to submit even after Gradescope is fully closed to submissions, you may email me the PDF you would otherwise have uploaded to Gradescope.)

D. You are of course welcome to hand in any problem set as early as you like.

3. Besides serious conflicts as in item 2 above, you may also take up to two extensions all semester. Each extension can be for up to 48 hours. To receive one of your two extensions, you must request it (by email, during office hours, or during an appointment) no later than 8pm ET on the due date. You also must have been attending class (at least twice a week) and handing in homework on time in the recent past.
To submit an extended problem set, if Gradescope is closed even to late submissions by that time (generally 24 hours after the original deadline), email me the PDF you would otherwise have uploaded to Gradescope.

Formatting and Collaboration Rules

1. Write legibly. Make your work a pleasure to read!

2. You must ``tag'' your problems on Gradescope, which means marking which page(s) each problem's solution appears on.

3. You may collaborate on homework. However:

A. You must write a note on your problem set saying the names of all people you collaborated with or got help from.

B. Each collaborator must hand in their own problem set. You cannot hand in a single set as the work of several people.

C. When collaborating, every student must work on every problem. You may not divide the problems up among yourselves.

D. Collaboration means discussing the problems together. However, the actual writing must be done individually;
     you must submit your answers in your own words. Copying is NOT allowed, and it will be considered academic dishonesty.
